Tell us the story behind your business. What inspired you to get started? What is your mission or purpose? What are your guiding values?
Citizen Yoga grew out of a need to equip people with necessary and effective coping mechanisms that can be applied in any facet of daily life. Grounded in connection, Citizen Yoga exists simply for every student to feel seen. Our goal is to empower the individual by teaching a safe, alignment-based yoga practice that students of all levels can maintain throughout their lives. Our mission is to improve mental health and prevent suicide through personal growth and transformation.
Tell us about a big project or customer that changed the trajectory of your business. What did you learn from this and where did the opportunity come from?
Looking for a way to reach more with our mission of improving mental health and preventing suicide through personal growth and transformation, we started our biggest event of the year, Yoga at the Big House! This annual charity event is hosted at the Big House (U of M stadium) in Ann Arbor and supports different non-profits each year, committed to Citizen Yoga's shared values. This past year, our beneficiaries were No Future Without Today and the MJR Foundation. We had over 1,000 yogis on the field practicing to support their causes.
Tell us about a great challenge on your journey that caused a transformation or pivot in the business. What insight do you carry with you from this experience?
When the COVID pandemic hit in 2020, our in-person studios were forced to shut down, leaving our students with no way to practice and no sense of community. This is why we created our live Zoom class schedule and our on-demand yoga platform. These pivots in our business and yoga practice kept us all connected to ourselves and each other through hard times and showed us we could reach more students world-wide, and show them the impact of genuine connection and support through yoga and community.
What's one thing you hope for the future of your industry, community, or work?
We hope to continue creating a community that is, in itself, a tool to improving mental health.
Why join a community like Bamboo? What do you get most from participating in this community?
Community is everything to us! Connecting with others is how we all succeed.
