Integral Tech Talk: Testing Patterns & Signal-to-Noise Ratio

Join Integral and guest speaker Sean Olszewski as we explore tools to improve your TDD ability and test suite quality to drive project health and success.

This session will discuss the concept of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a test suite, which is the measure of how easy a test failure can be correlated to a particular part of a code base.

Beginning with an overview of what SNR is, we’ll then examine the ways in which certain testing patterns influence the SNR of a test suite, as well as how to balance tests to get your desired ratio. Ultimately, this knowledge will make debugging and refactoring easier when one of your tests fails, saving you time and frustration in the moments where you need to make code changes.

Attendees can expect to learn the concept of signal-to-noise ratio, as well as how to balance SNR by the selection of testing patterns. The dichotomy of unit and integration tests will be further broken down into specific patterns that ladder up to a skill set that will help you design better test suites.
